Hoi An Massage Etiquette: Tipping, What to Wear & Booking Tips

Good spa etiquette is mostly clear communication—not a list of rules to memorise.

Wear something comfortable, arrive with time to check in and tell the therapist what pressure feels right. Tipping in Vietnam is discretionary rather than compulsory; focus first on choosing the correct treatment and confirming its current price.

Etiquette starts with booking the right service

Choose by body area, treatment style and time—not by an unfamiliar name

These three options make an easy decision path: focused feet, gentler full-body massage or a longer warmth-led ritual. Prices are read from Serena’s current booking data.

01 · Focused and easy to plan

Foot Reflexology

Best for: Tired feet and guests who want a shorter first appointment

Thirty minutes is a clear starting point when walking fatigue is the priority and you do not need a full-body treatment.

Before the appointment

Confirm the treatment, duration, price and arrival time in one message

A useful booking request names the service, duration, number of guests and preferred time. Add one realistic alternative when your schedule allows. The form is a request until Serena confirms therapist and room availability, so do not begin travelling to the spa based only on the submitted screen.

Mention pregnancy, recent injury, allergies, skin sensitivity or another relevant health concern before confirmation. A spa can help review comfort and treatment suitability, but massage is not medical diagnosis or care. Seek qualified advice when appropriate.

  • State the exact treatment and duration for each guest.
  • Give a preferred time and one workable alternative.
  • Share pressure preferences and areas to avoid.
  • Wait for confirmation before planning your arrival.

Clothing and communication

Wear comfortable everyday clothing and say what feels right during the session

You do not need special spa clothing to arrive. Wear something comfortable and follow the preparation guidance Serena gives for your confirmed service. Keep valuables to a practical minimum and allow time for changing when the selected treatment requires it.

Pressure is personal. Say whether you prefer light, medium or firmer work before treatment begins, then ask for an adjustment if anything feels uncomfortable. Polite feedback is useful information for the therapist, not bad etiquette.

“Choose enough time to feel restored, not so much that the appointment becomes another rushed plan.”

Tipping and departure

Tipping after a massage in Vietnam is appreciated when you choose it, but it is not compulsory

Vietnam’s official tourism website describes tipping as more common in spas than in restaurants while also noting that travellers are under no obligation to tip. Treat a tip as a personal response to service, not as a hidden part of the listed treatment price.

Before leaving, check your belongings and avoid placing an immediate fixed commitment after the advertised treatment time. The complete spa visit includes consultation, changing and departure as well as the massage itself.

The decision desk

You will not offend the spa by asking a clear, respectful question.

I do not know how much to tip.

Tipping is discretionary in Vietnam. Decide according to your experience and comfort rather than treating it as a compulsory percentage of the menu price.

I am nervous about asking for different pressure.

Say light, medium or firmer before the session, then request an adjustment whenever comfort changes. The therapist needs that feedback.

I do not own spa clothing.

Wear comfortable everyday clothes. Serena can explain any treatment-specific changing or preparation after your appointment is confirmed.

Do you tip after a massage in Hoi An?+

You may tip when you feel the service warrants it, but tipping is not compulsory in Vietnam. It should remain separate from the clearly listed treatment price.

What should I wear to a massage in Hoi An?+

Arrive in comfortable everyday clothing. Follow Serena’s preparation and changing guidance for the specific service once it is confirmed.

How early should I arrive at Serena Spa?+

Allow enough time to check in and discuss pressure, sensitive areas and relevant health information. Ask Serena for the recommended arrival time when confirming your booking.

Is it acceptable to talk during a massage?+

Yes. Speak whenever you need pressure, temperature, positioning or another comfort detail adjusted. You can otherwise keep the session as quiet as you prefer.

Can I book a Hoi An massage for two people?+

Yes. Add one treatment for each guest and ask to start together. Serena will confirm therapist, room and timing availability.

Ready when you are

Choose one treatment, share what feels comfortable and let Serena confirm the rest.

Review the current price, send your preferred time and include pressure or sensitivity notes. You do not need to know every custom before making a good booking.
